8. The Levels of Precepts

 

As there have been various level of teachers throughout the course of the Great Way, there have also been grades and stages in the Buddhist precepts. The ultimate awakening or realization presupposes the solving of an advanced phrase, but sometimes a peripheral dharma or knowledge from theoretical Zen has been mistaken for enlightenment. Since the turn of the century, and especially since the era in which the Honorable Zen Masters Hyanggok and Sŏngch'ŏl solved the advanced precepts, or kongan, the dogma of ultimate and precipitate enlightenment has been embraced.
